Dividing Decimals

Why we estimate

-to get close to the answer.

-is to make the problem easier.

-is to know what to expect from our calculation.

What I estimate and calculate should be close.

1.36 L of O.J. there is for of you.

a) estimate how much you each get.

b) calculate how much you each get.

2.0 divided by 4 would equal 0.5 and that is 1/2 over estimating.

1.0 divided by 4 would equal 0.25 and that is 1/4 under estimating.

1.3 divided by 4 would equal 0.3 (0.36)

1.6 divided by 4 would equal 0.4 (0.46)

or you could use long division
o.34
41.36
-0
______
1.3
-12
______
16
-16
______
0

So then the answer would be that each person would get 0.34 L of O.J.
Here is the next question.
24.6
373.8
-6
______
13
-12
______
18

The answer would be 24.6
Here's a good website you could find more about how to divide decimals http://www.coolmath.com/prealgebra/02-decimals/10-decimals-dividing-by-decimal-01.htm
This is a video on dividing decimals.

This is our home work.
5.4 divided by 0.6
Use number line and estimating and long or short division.

Dividing Decimals

Dividing Decimals

Division means that in the statement 6 divided by 3=2 there are 3 groups of 2 in 6.
Quotient is an answer to a division question.

You have 6 dollars, you need pens for scrapbooking.
Fancy glitter pens cost 0.40 each
How many can you buy?
Use a 100 grid.

15.4 divided by 3.6=427778

15 divided by 3 = 5

4.27778

4.4 divided by 0.42=1047619

5 divided by 0.5 = 10
10.47619

Remember if you use a calculator don't just right the answer down, and remember one dumb finger could change the whole answer!

Remember to do your homework!

20.1 divided by 4.7= 42766
3.5 divided by 0.213= 164319

Estimating Decimals with Multipilication

1.69 x 5 ( tax included )
Younger sibling says it only costs 5 dollars.
Older sibling says it only costs $10.
What are they thinking , how are they estimating ?
The younger sibling is under estimating. $1 x 5= $5.00 front end estimating
The older sibling is over estimating.$2 x $5= $10 rounded it . Relative size .

Is $9.00 enough, and prove it .
$1 x 5= $5.00 $9 - $5= $4.00 left .
0.69 = 0.70 x 5 = 3.5
$5 + $3.50 = $8.50
OR
$1.69 = $2.00 $2.00 x $5 = $10 0.31 = 0.30
0.30 x 5 = 1.50 $10.00 - $1.50 = $8.50

Where does the decimal go ?

2.2 x 1.8= 3960
2.2 rounded = 2
1.8 rounded = 2 x 2 = 4
4 is the near 3.960.

3.9 x 5.8= 22620
3.9 is rounded to 4
5.8 is rounded to 6 x 4 = 24
24 is close to 22.620

2.57 x 0.45= 1.18220
2.57 is rounded to 3
0.45 is rounded to 0.50 x 3 = 1.5
1.5 is the nearest to 1.18220

A pronghorn is 58 kg .
A Dall's weighs 1.5 times as much
How much does Dall's weigh ?
58 kg = 60 kg x 2= 120 kg
60 kg x 1= 60 kg
90 kg is between 120 and 60.
