Random

Random: An event in which every Outcome has an equal chance of occurring.
ex. Flipping a coin, Spinning a spinner, Rolling a dice, and Selecting a card.

Not random:
Spinning a spinner with one unequal side.

Goldilocks sits on chairs and eats porridge. How many possible outcomes are there?

There are 9 possible outcomes. 1/9 and 1:9 and 1%.
Q: Does Goldilocks choose the chair and porridge at Random? Explain your answer.
A: No, she has a choice and preference.
She is picking the one she likes.
*If you have a choice, It's not random.

Q: What is the probability of Goldilocks picking just the right porridge?
A: 100%, Goldilocks picks it.

A marble is randomly selected from a bag containing one blue, one red, and one green. Then, a four sided die labeled 1, 2, 3, and 4 is rolled.

a)Create a table to show the Sample Spacer.
b) What is the probability of choosing any colour, and rolling any number but 3.
c) What is P(blue or green, a number greater than 1)?
d) What is P(black, 1)?
e) What is the probability that a red, green or blue marble is selected and the die displays a 4?

ANSWERS:
a)
b)9/12= 3/4 and 3:4 and 75%
c)6/12= 1/2 and 50%
d)0/12 and 0:12 and o% (impossible event)
e) 3/12= 1/4 and 1:4 and 25%

Homework:
A four sided die is labelled 1, 2, 3 and 4.
A spinner divided into 5 equal parts: fly, swim, hop, glide and walk.
a) Create a table and sample spacers.
b) What is P(3, swim)?
c) What is P(odd#, hop)?

Probability

There's 4 coins in a cup- 0.25, 0.10, 0.05, 0.01
You draw 1 coin then put it back, then draw another coin. If those 2 coins add up to an even sum you win. If they add up to and odd sum you lose.
Do you want to play? Explain the odds, are they in your favor or not.

Organize Outcomes
Create a Table or a Chart

P (even sum)=10/16 or 5/8 or 62.5%
P (odd sum)=6/16 or 3/8 or 37.5%

A coin is flipped and a six sided die is rolled. These 2 are called independent events.
Independent event- The outcome of one event has no effect on the outcome of another event.
Sample Space- All possible outcomes of an experiment.

A coin is flipped and a six sided die is rolled
a)Use a table to list all possible outcomes.
b)How many possible outcomes are there
c)Write the sample space for this combination of events.

Possible outcomes:12
Sample space: (H1) (H2) (H3) (H4) (H5) (H6)
(T1) (T2) (T3) (T4) (T5) (T6)
Find P (heads and even)
3/12=1/4 or 25% or 1:4

  • Homework

Possible outcomes / favorable outcomes

Flip a coin -H/H or T - possible 1/2 or 50 % or 1:2

What is the probability of rolling a 6 with a standard die ?

- Favourable/Posible 1/6 or 1:6 or 16.7%

P (6) with a standard die

P ( ) means the probability of the ting inside the brackets happening

The letters SNOW are placed in a bag?

A.) What is p (w) when drawing 1 letter ?

-Favorable/possible W/SNOW 1/4 25% 1:4

B.) P(constant) out of the bag

-Favorable/possible SNW/SNOW 3/4 75% 3:4

C.) P (B) out of the bag?

-Favorable/possible b/SNOW 0/4 0% o:4

10 marbles in the bag. 3 blue, 1 green, 6 red

A.) P(red)with 1 try? favorable/possible r r r r r r /b g r r r b b r r 6/10 3/5 60% 6/20 = 3:5

B.) P(red or blue or green)?

- Favorable/possible 10/10 100% 1:1

H.W.

P (constant)

P (letter)

P (number)

Create and answer a probability quaestion with the results of 0%, 20%, 60%, 100% .

Introduction of Probability.

Probability:
  • Is the likely hood or change of an event occurring.
  • Probability= favourable outcomes divided or over possible outcomes.
Probability can also be expressed as a ratio, fraction, or percent.

Outcome:
  • One possible result of a probability experiment.
  •  (What might happen)
Favourable Outcome:
  • a successful result in a probability experiment.
  • (What people want to happen)

Prime Numbers

Prime Numbers.
Factor is a number that goes into another number exactly with NO decimals or remainders.
Example : 2 is a factor of 6
2 goes into 6 exactly 3 times

2 is NOT a factor of5because 2goes into 5, 2.5 times

Find the factors of 4, 12, 16, 17, 24, 41 and 96
. 4- 1, 2, 4 12- 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12 16- 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 17- 1, 17 24- 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24 41- 1, 41 96- 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24, 32, 48, 96 Prime numbers have only 2 factors ( one and itself ) Composite numbers- numbers with more than 2 factors.

Determine weather each number is prime or composite.

1- Special 9- 1, 3, 9 composite 13- 1, 13 prime 28- 1, 2, 16, 28 composite 31- 1, 31 prime 41- 1,41 prime 51- 1, 3, 17, 51 composite A multiple, is the opposite of factor. Example : 10 is a multiple of 2 and 5

L.C.M. is lowest common multiple
3- 3,6 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30 ... 4- 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40 ... 3 and 4 both have 12 in common. 3 and 4 both have 24 in common. 12 is the lowest common multiple.

01/08/2010 Fractions.

There are 32 students in the class. One fourth of them are boys. Half of the boys passed the test. Three quarters of the girls passed the test. How many students passed the test? (32 kids all together)
Boys: Girls:
8 24
Passed: Passed:
4 + 18 = 22
*ANSWER: 22 kids passed the test.

Let's go shopping! Louis finds some great deals on dresses and earrings. The dress he bought is 3/5 the original of $60. The earrings were 3/8 the original price of $24. How much is his bill beofre tax? How much after 5% GST and 7% PST?

dress: 60/5= __ x 3 = 36.

earrings: 24/8= __ x 3 = 9.
= 45$ before tax.
45 x 12 = $5.40 (tax)
or ...
45 x 0.12 = $5.40 (tax)
*Your total bill will be $50.40

1/4 + 2/4= 3/4, 0.75, 75%
2/3 + 2/3= 1 1/3 or 4/3.

1/10 of 2/5 of 1/3 of 3/4 of 1/5 of 1/2 of 100.

1000 to, 500 to, 100 to, 75 to, 25 to, 10!

* Remember, to do your HOMEWORK! :)
3/10 + 13/25 + 37/75 = ?
