Range and Outliers

Range - the positive difference between the largest and smallest values in a data set.
Outlier - a value that is smaller or larger than the other data value.
- a data set may have one or more outliers or no outliers.

Find the range:
a) 7, 4, 3, 6, 2, 5, 8, 3 ----> 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 ----> 8-2 = 6
b) 11, 8, 8,5, 7, 6, 7, 6, 6---->5, 6, 6, 6, 7, 7, 8, 8,11--->11-5=6
c) -4, 3, -1, 0, 2 ----> -4, -1, 0, 2, 3 ----> 3-(-4) = 7
Find the outliers:
a) 18, 19, 79, 17, 20, 12 ---> 12, 17, 18, 19, 20, 79 ---> 79
b) 14, 14, 16, 15, 1, 16 ---> 1, 14, 14, 15, 16, 16 ---> 1
c) 98, 202, 99, 91, 2, 95, 89, 88 ---> 2, 88, 89, 91, 95, 98, 99, 202 ---> 2 and 202

Algebra and Probability Review

What is the probability of rolling a 6 with one die and landing a coin on heads? Show a tree diagram to explain your answer.

Solving one step algebra equations
Apply the opposite operation

The 3 steps for solving one step algebra equations:
1st- Isolate the variable
2nd- Apply opposite operation
3rd- Check your work

Using a Number Line to Add Integers

Using a number line to add integers

Positive numbers move right

Negative numbers move left

Number lines can also be vertical: Positive numbers move up and negative numbers move down

Area and Integers

1. I am creating two circular flower beds in my front yard. The 1st flower bed has a diameter of 12m the second has a radius of 8m. My front yard is 20m wide and 30m long. The rest of the front yard is grass. How many square meters of grass will I have to cut once the flower beds are in? You will have to cut 286 m2.

First Flower Bed
Ao= pi r2
Ao= 3.14 x 6 squared
Ao= 3.14 x 36
Ao= 113.04 m2

Second Flower Bed
Ao= pi r2
Ao= 3.13 x 8 squared
Ao= 3.14 x 64
Ao= 200.96 m2

The Front Yard
A= L x W
A= 30 x 20
A= 600 m2
113.04 + 200.96= 314
600 - 314= 286 m2

2. You have a triangular yard with the height of 15m and base of 10m. You build a sandbox that has a circumference of 6.28. How much of the yard is left after you build the sandbox? 71.86 m2 of the yard is left.

area=BxH/2

area=10x15/2

area=150/2

area=75m2

Ao=pi r2
Ao= 3.14 x 1 squared
Ao= 3.14 x 1
Ao= 3.14

75-3.14= 71.86 m2

Integers
Integers are positive and negative whole numbers and zero. eg. 2, -6, 91, +103, -1000, 0

NOT INTEGERS- 3/4, 1/2, 4/5, 0.1, -0.7, 91.3, 1.3, 95%, -60%

Integers are shown on a number line or using integer chips.

HOMEWORK

1. ID each integer

a . b . c ... d .... e....... f .....

2. Represent each integer with chips and/or a number line.

a) +2 b) 6 c) -4 d) +7 e) -6 f) -8

Subtracting Fractions With Unlike Denominators

To subtract fractions with unlike denominators, you MUST find a common denominator and use equivalent fractions.

eg. 3/4 - 1/2
eg.2/3 - 1/4

eg. 3/4 - 1/8

Unit Fraction- A fraction with a numerator of 1.

Do page 241- 244 # 1-23 odd THEN even.
  • Do the odd numbers for homework.

Probability

There's 4 coins in a cup- 0.25, 0.10, 0.05, 0.01
You draw 1 coin then put it back, then draw another coin. If those 2 coins add up to an even sum you win. If they add up to and odd sum you lose.
Do you want to play? Explain the odds, are they in your favor or not.

Organize Outcomes
Create a Table or a Chart

P (even sum)=10/16 or 5/8 or 62.5%
P (odd sum)=6/16 or 3/8 or 37.5%

A coin is flipped and a six sided die is rolled.These 2 are called independent events.
Independent event- The outcome of one event has no effect on the outcome of another event.
Sample Space- All possible outcomes of an experiment.

A coin is flipped and a six sided die is rolled
a)Use a table to list all possible outcomes.
b)How many possible outcomes are there
c)Write the sample space for this combination of events.

Possible outcomes:12
Sample space: (H1) (H2) (H3) (H4) (H5) (H6)
(T1) (T2) (T3) (T4) (T5) (T6)
Find P (heads and even)
3/12=1/4 or 25% or 1:4

  • Homework
    A toonie is flipped and a 4 sided die is rolled. Using a chart find the P(tails and odd#)
