Exam Review Study Guide.

Define the following :
Translation : slide across a straight line
Rotation : A turn at a fixed point call Center of Rotation .
Reflection : A flip over a mirror line.

* Mirror can be anywhere; doesn't have to be on an axis .

Reminder : There is only 12 days of school left before exams, start studying tonight, and don't procrastinate to the last minute.

Today at school :)

1. Draw the fourth figure

2. Create a T chart to show the pattern

3. Write an algebraic expression to show the pattern

4. Describe the pattern if your OWN words
The term number (x) squared (times itself) equals the number of circles (y).

5. Find the tenth term.

10= 10 x 10 = 100
6. Graph the pattern.

Phi
lly woke up this morning and checked his bank account he had ___ dollars. He bought a shirt online, affecting his account by __ leaving him with __ . He then went to breakfast that affected his account by __ leaving him with __. The job he has paid him __. How much does he have? ___
Use : (-20), (-15), 65, 75, 68, 100, 140

Yesterday morning it was __, by 3:00 it was __ warmer making the temperature __. At midnight it was __. At lunch it was __ colder than 3:00 and __ warmer than midnight and __ warmer than the morning because it was __ .
Use : 13, 10, 9, 8, 6, 5, 3, (-1), (-5)

Make your own using : -(10), 10, 0, 7, 3, (-5), 1

I have __ dollars. I add __ to make __. I won __ and __ to make the opposite from my start. I was robbed __. I found _ and _ dollars now :)

Subtracting Integers .

Today in math we learned how to subtract integers.

5 - 2 =3

(-5) - (-3) = 2

Show using chips :
(-7) - (-3) =
3 - (-4) =
(-6) - 2 =

(-2) - (-5) =

This morning it was -2. This afternoon will be 3. Determine the difference of these temperatures.

Method 1)
Subtract the morning temperature from the after noon temperature.
3 - (-2) = 5

Method 2)
Subtract afternoon temperature from the morning temperature .
(-2) - 3= 5

Sorry if it's confusing, I tried my best to explain it :)

Construct a Circle Graph

Create Circle Graphs .

1. Construct(make, build) a circle
Use a string, compass or trace a circle.
2. Create the Central Angles
- central angle is an angle formed by 2 radii
- the vertex of the angle is at the center of the circle
Create a circle graph :
25% like
strawberry
25% like vanilla
50% like
chocolate

Make a graph for the following information :

3 kids use the computer 1-3 days per week.

9 kids use the computer 0 days per week.
18 kids use the computer 4 or more days per week.

Step 1. Find out how many in total.
Add all of the kids together = 30 kids in total
Step 2. Convert to percent
100% = 360 degrees .
10% = 36 degrees
30% = 108 degrees

60% = 216 degrees

Circle Graph

A circle graph is a graph that is represents data using sections of a circle.
Sector- A sector o
f a circle formed by 2 radii and the arc of the circle connection the 2 radii.

Example of a General Graph and a more Specific Graph

How man
y were asked ?

1) Title = Pets of students in Mr.W's class (24 students)
2) What are the different categories represented by the graph ?
- Cat, Dog, Other, No pets .

3) What percent of the class has a dog ? How many have a dog ?

- 25 % of the class has a dog .
- 6 kids have a dog
4) What percent of the class has a cat ? How many have a cat ?
- 33 % of the class has a cat .
- 1/3 of 24 = 8 Kids have a cat .
5) What percent of the circle is represented by all the sectors ?
- 100 %
6) Would this graph make sense if the title or sector labels were missing ?
- No, because then we wouldn't understand what the graph is all about .

Circle

Parts of the Circle
  • centre
  • radius
  • diameter
  • circumference - is the distance around a circle
-usually represented by c
-this is a linear measurement

π = pi- the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter

1. Find circumference if diameter is 2m.
2. Find circumference of each circle.

Subtracting with mixed numbers

If you have unlike denominators :
2 3/4 - 1 1/4
One method use fraction strips
* Second method = Subtract whole numbers
Answer the following :

a) 2 2/3 - 1 1/3 =
2 - 1 = 1
2/3 - 1/3 = 1/3

1 1/3

b) 3 7/8 - 1 3/8 =
3 - 1 = 2

7/8 - 3/8 = 4/8
2 4/8

Lowest terms = 2 2/4, 2 1/2

c) 4 3/4 - 1/4 =

3/4 - 1/4= 2/4
4 2/4
Lowest terms - 4 1/2

Unlike Denominators
- Find the common denominator
We don't want to have a whole number (2) and a negative fraction so we must regroup

* ANOTHER WAY TO REGROUP

Steps :
1. Subtract the whole numbers
2. Subtract fractions
3. Combine them

Answer the following ; a ) 4 1/4 - 3 2/5

b) 4 1/4 - 7/8

Estimating Decimals with Multipilication

1.69 x 5 ( tax included )
Younger sibling says it only costs 5 dollars.
Older sibling says it only costs $10.
What are they thinking , how are they estimating ?
The younger sibling is under estimating. $1 x 5= $5.00 front end estimating
The older sibling is over estimating.$2 x $5= $10 rounded it . Relative size .

Is $9.00 enough, and prove it .
$1 x 5= $5.00 $9 - $5= $4.00 left .
0.69 = 0.70 x 5 = 3.5
$5 + $3.50 = $8.50
OR
$1.69 = $2.00 $2.00 x $5 = $10 0.31 = 0.30
0.30 x 5 = 1.50 $10.00 - $1.50 = $8.50

Where does the decimal go ?

2.2 x 1.8= 3960
2.2 rounded = 2
1.8 rounded = 2 x 2 = 4
4 is the near 3.960.

3.9 x 5.8= 22620
3.9 is rounded to 4
5.8 is rounded to 6 x 4 = 24
24 is close to 22.620

2.57 x 0.45= 1.18220
2.57 is rounded to 3
0.45 is rounded to 0.50 x 3 = 1.5
1.5 is the nearest to 1.18220

A pronghorn is 58 kg .
A Dall's weighs 1.5 times as much
How much does Dall's weigh ?
58 kg = 60 kg x 2= 120 kg
60 kg x 1= 60 kg
90 kg is between 120 and 60.

HOMEWORK
46 x 2.5
64 x 4.5
estimate then calculate
